Description
West Façade, Right Frieze, Life of Christ, Right Side of Right Portal
From the left:
41: Mission of the Apostles (?)
Heimann identifies this group of three figures as the Mission of the apostles. The scene is in poor condition - all the figures are headless but have traces of halos on the wall behind their heads. Christ (crossed halo, barefoot) stands at center, He is standing frontally, but gesturing toward the figure at left, which is turned toward him and has slightly bent knees. To the right of Christ is a shorter figure standing frontally and holding a book in its veiled hands. Heimann says that an alternate explanation, though less likely, is the Traditio legis, in which Christ stands between Peter and Paul, and gives the keys to Peter and a scroll to Paul. (Heimann, p. 88)
42: The Apostles Leaving on Their Mission (?)
Heimann suggests this group of three figures is apostles leaving to "preach to the nations" (Heimann, pp 88-9). The identification is uncertain since the figures are headless and in poor condition. The three figures stand frontally, holding books. There are traces of halos on the wall behind them.
At left are figures from:
38: Supper at Emmaus.
39: Denial of Peter (?).
40: Christ commanding Peter 'Feed my sheep' (?)
