Description
West Façade, Right Frieze, Life of Christ, Right Side of Right Portal
40: Christ commanding Peter 'Feed my sheep' (?)
(John 21:15-6)
Heimann identifies this scene as Christ commanding Peter, 'Feed my sheep'. (John 21:15-6) (Heimann, p. 88). Houvet identifies it as the apostles listening to the disciples who have returned from Emmaus (Houvet, p. 30); Nolan believes it is the Incredulity of Thomas (pp. 57, 61, 69 n. 32).
The two figures stand facing each other. Both are headless, but have traces of halos on the walls behind their heads. The figure at left holds a large book. The figure at right raises his hand in a gesture of blessing and in his other hand holds an unidentified object.
At left are figures from:
37: Christ meets two pilgrims on the way to Emmaus.
38: Supper at Emmaus.
39: Denial of Peter (?).
At right are figures from:
41: Mission of the Apostles (?).
