Description
West Façade, Right Frieze, Life of Christ, Right Side of Central Portal
24: Unidentified Scene (Mary and Joseph Taking Jesus Home?)
(Luke 2:51)
Heimann identifies this as "Mary and Joseph Taking Jesus Home". (Heimann, p. 82-83) In the New Testament, this occurred after the 12 year-old Christ had met with the Doctors in the temple. (Luke 2:51)
There are three figures in this scene: a shorter figure between two taller ones. All are headless. The "child" between the adults seems to be holding a cylindrical object in "his" right hand-perhaps a rolled-up scroll. The adults may to be facing each other, over the head of the child, with the woman and child moving to the right. The [presumed] man holds a book, and has turned his head and shoulders back towards the other figures while walking to the right.
At left are figures from:
22: Presentation in the Temple.
23: Christ among the Doctors.
At right are figures from:
25: John the Baptist Meditating.
26: Baptism of Christ.
