Description
Children’s Hospital was the gift of over 22,000 citizens of Pittsburgh and neighboring towns, who, in 1924, gave $116,000 to build and equip it. In November 1926 the hospital moved into its present building, designed by York & Sawyer with E.P. Mellon, in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. This was the first building in the University of Pittsburgh’s Medical center. The original brick and stone structure, eight-stories in height, was fireproof and practically soundproof. More than 2,400 children had gone through its wards during the first year the hospital was in its new building, and over 14,000 visits had been paid to its dispensaries. Today, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is renowned for cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, critical care medicine, diabetes, oncology, neurosurgery, organ and tissue transportation, orthopedics, otolaryngology, and surgery. The hospital is also the only accredited Level 1 Pediatric Regional Resource Trauma center in western Pennsylvania and one of only two in the state.
