Description
Bedford Dwellings were the first public housing development erected by the Housing Authority of Pittsburgh. The development was located on the crest of a ridge in the Upper Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh in an area bounded by Kirkpatrick and Watt Streets, and Bedford Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard. Construction on the units started in December 1938. The project was to contain 420 units on slightly more than 18 acres. On the western end of the project site recreational facilities including a playground, swimming pool, ball field, and a recreational building were to be developed by Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works. In its description of the development the Housing Authority said, "it takes natural pride in sponsoring a trend toward living where the sun shines the whole day and the pounding of the mills is only far echo.”
