Description
Dedicated in 1937, the Cathedral of Learning became the focal point of the Oakland and the University of Pittsburgh campus. Located on Fifth Avenue in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, it was designed by architect Charles Zeller Klauder and is the tallest gothic styled building and second-tallest education building in the world. The structure is a mix of English and French Gothic styles, which houses a massive commons room and nationality rooms. The final cost was between $8 million and $12 million. It only took about 10 years to build, thanks to the Depression that interrupted construction and left the half-finished building with exposed beams for a few years in the early 1930s. Immediately in front of the structure (center) is Stephen Foster Memorial, a performance hall and archive holding Foster artifacts. In the right background is Heinz Chapel, which features some of the tallest stained glass windows in the world.
