Description
Morewood Gardens, located at the intersection of Morewood and Forbes Avenues in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, was once a seven-story, English-style luxury apartment complex built in 1928-29 that catered to the wealthy Pittsburgh elite. It comprised four towers, with sixty apartments, a penthouse, and a sundeck on the roof. It was considered one of the most outstanding complexes of its kind in Pittsburgh. Faced with the need for a new women's dormitory, Carnegie Mellon University acquired Morewood Gardens in the summer of 1946 from the Morewood Corporation for slightly more than $1 million (much less than the $3 million estimated cost of the building). Students first occupied the structure in the fall of 1948. Morewood E-Tower was added to the building in 1961.
