Description
Gothic; The Miracles of the Virgin WindowDelaporte no. 9, Deremble-Manhes no. 38Panel 9: A man holds two small animals in front of an altar. At left is an altar with a hanging lamp above and a curtain hanging from a beam. At right stands a man carrying two small animals, one yellow and one white. Much of this panel is restoration glass. The subject matter is unclear. Delaporte and Manhes-Deremble suggests that the animals could be gold and silver. (Delaporte, p. 193). However, A. K. Porter quotes a a letter from Haymo, Abbot of St.-Pierre-sur-Dives which describes how, at Chartres in 1144, animals were brought to be healed at altars set up at the construction site. (Porter, Medieval Architecture, p. 151-6). (See also Adams, Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres, p. , Branner, Chartres Cathedral, p. 93-94, and Coulton, p. 339-341, for Haymo's letter, and those of Hugo of Amiens and Robert of Torigny).; The Miracles of the Virgin Window
