Description
The fourteen-story Lothrop Hall is located at 19 Lothrop Street on the University of Pittsburgh campus in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. The structure and street are named for Sylvanus Lothrop, an important Pittsburgh engineer and businessman who built the first locks and a number of major bridges on the Monongahela River during the 1830s and 1840s. The residence hall, which houses 700 undergraduate students, was originally known as the University of Pittsburgh Residence for Nurses. The general contractor on this construction project, which began around August 1950, was the W.F. Trimble and Sons Company. The building is composed of single and double dorms, with a communal bathroom and shower on each floor. The structure also contains the Undergraduate Nurses in Training Community, a fitness center, laundry room, and a mailroom. The facility is located in the center of the University of Pittsburgh Health Center. In this small section of the campus people such as Jonas Salk, Benjamin Spock, Erik Erikson, and Thomas Starzl have practiced medicine, conducted research, and made far-reaching contributions to the health of people worldwide. The structure in the background is the Presbyterian University Hospital and the building in the left background is Salk Hall.
