Description
The Minersville School District in Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood was located in the area served by the Irene Kaufmann Settlement. The school district consisted of five schools: Minersville, Penn, Somers, Rose, and Madison. The children in this photograph are from the Minersville School, which opened in 1860 with an approximate attendance of 125 students. Construction began in 1859, leading to a two-story brick building at Center Avenue and Morgan Street. In 1874 a third story and wings were added to the building. The school underwent remolding and fireproofing in 1928. Minersville School closed in 1942.
