Description
“The House Where We Began” at the H.J. Heinz Company main plant in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. H.J. Heinz and his partner Noble started the business at this house in 1869 where they grated and bottled his horseradish in the kitchen. In 1904 the Kress-Hanlon Company jacked up the house on blocking timbers, trussed it with cables and rolled it 800 feet from Main Street in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, to the right bank of the Allegheny River when it was placed on a barge and transported five miles down the river to the main plant. In the background is the three-story building that houses the vinegar processing operations. The structure was built with hundreds of blue glass panes that allowed only non-glare light to enter the facilities. Vinegar products bottled in this building were shipped all over the world.
