Description
Construction of its facilities in Pittsburgh began in 1888 when Westinghouse organized the East Pittsburgh Improvement Company which broke ground in the Turtle Creek Valley in 1890 for the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. In addition, factories for the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company and the Westinghouse Machine Company were completed shortly thereafter. The East Pittsburgh plant began with a purchase of 40 acres in East Pittsburgh and construction commencing in February 1894. Construction moved quickly and by November 1894 the machine shop, warehouse, powerhouse, brass foundry, punching and blacksmith shops were all complete. The plant opened on September 12, 1894, with a grand reception for officers and delegates of the 28th National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic. Pictured is the Old Meter Works on Braddock Avenue on the site of the ‘S’ Building at Westinghouse Electric Corporation’s East Pittsburgh facility.
