Description
Ira Lewis was the business manager of the Pittsburgh Courier and ran the newspaper for Robert L. Vann and, later, Mrs. Vann, until his death in 1948. His home, which he bought from a local bootlegger, still stands on the 600 block of Wilkinsburg Avenue at the top of one of Pittsburgh's steepest hills. This landscaped yard was used to entertain the Pittsburgh elite and for the marriage of Mr. Lewis's daughter. Lewis is reported to have spent up to $1000 per month on flowers. He also raised chickens there.
