Description
Pennsylvania Railroad Station, known locally as "Penn Station," before renovations were completed in the 1980s. Originally called Union Station upon completion in 1903, Pennsylvania Station served as the Pittsburgh station for the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1912 the station's name was changed to Pennsylvania station, to match the other names of stations along the Pennsylvania Railroad. Architect Daniel Burnham designed Penn Station with a rotunda that is said to be the most magnificent feature of the building, used as a waiting area for passengers. The station also featured a hotel, common to stations of it's era, which was converted into apartments. Pennsylvania Station still serves its original purpose as the westernmost stop along Amtrak's Pennsylvanian route, which travels across the state to Philadelphia.
