Jamb Statue; Gothic; South Porch, Right Portal Right JambsGregory- HeadGregory the Great, (d. 604), was from a patrician Roman family. He was a prefect of Rome, when, in about 573, he became a monk and used his estates to found monasteries. In 578, he was ordained as one of the seven deacons of Rome. He was sent to Constantinople for six years to serve as ambassador to the Byzantine court. In about 586, he returned to Rome where he became a powerful abbot and teacher. In 590, he was named as Pope. He was a powerful and effective Pope who strongly influenced many of the institutions of the Papacy and the Church. One of his most notable accomplishments was to send Augustine to Britain to Christianize that country.
