Pillar- bas-relief; Gothic; South Porch- Left Pillar of Left PortalEast Face-Martyrdoms 4: St. Vincent’s body guarded by birds.Vincent, a Spaniard of noble birth, was a deacon by Bishop Valerius of Saragossa. The Roman magistrate Dacien condemned Vincent to death. Vincent survived many kinds of torture. This scene conflates two episodes that occurred to Vincent’s body after his death. In one, his body was exposed to be eaten by wild beasts, but was guarded by ravens. In the second, Dacien ordered that Vincent’s body be thrown into the sea with a millstone is suspended from his neck by a rope.At the bottom of the panel are waves. above them floats Vincent’s naked body with a millstone tied to a rope around his neck. On the body stand a bird (right) and a four-legged creature.At the top of the panel, a hand of God reached down from a stylized cloud.The scene is framed by trilobed arch supported by columns. Above are towers, gables, and roofs.; South Porch, Left Portal, Left Pillar
