Archivolt; Gothic; North Porch, Left Portal Outer Archivolt- Personifications of the Blessings (outer) and the Active and Contemplative Life of Mary (inner) Left Side of Archivolt - Personifications and Active Life of MaryLower Left. A woman (haloed) Her hair is unbound and she wears a crown, She holds a long staff with a (probably restored) cross at its tip. She holds the top of a large triangular shield whose point rests on the ground, The shield has a standing angel holding a round object. Houvet suggested that this is the personification of Joy.Lower Right.A seated woman with a veil does an unidentified task (to a skein of wool?). She uses a board with a large protuberance and a hole so she can hold it with her foot. Upper RightA woman (haloed) The head of this figure is broken off. She holds a staff the top of a large triangular shield whose point rests on the ground, The shield has an angel swinging a censer. Houvet suggested that this is the personification of “Volupté”Upper LeftA seated woman with a veil and a flat cap spins wool on a distaff.; North Porch, Left
