Description
Jamb Figure; Gothic; North Porch, Left Portal (Incarnation Portal)Right Jambs- Visitation (Elizabeth - Detail)The Virgin Mary (left) and her kinswoman Elizabeth (mother of John the Baptist) meet to rejoice in their pregnancies. (Luke 1:39-56) Both have a halo and wears a veil. It is curious that the face of Elizabeth appears to be younger than that of the Virgin (left), since in the gospels Mary is much younger than Elizabeth. However, the identities of the figures are quite firm, since the socle of the figure on the left has the burning bush, a traditional symbol of Mary's virginity.; North Porch, Left Portal (Incarnation Portal)
