Description
Jamb Statues; Gothic; North Porch, Right Portal, Right JambsJoseph-detail socleThis socle is under a jamb figure usually identified as the Old Testament hero Joseph. On the socle a winged, scaled dragon is at left. It seems to be talking to (licking the cheek of?) a woman with unbound hair. She holds a scroll which may have once held an inscription. Katzenellenbogen suggests she is Potiphar's wife who attempts to seduce Joseph and then accuses him of rape (Genesis 39:6-18). Kidson points out that in the Glossa Ordinaria, Potiphar's wife is identified with the Jewish Synagogue, which is susceptible to the the "blandishments of false gods." (Kidson, Chartres, p.52.)In the cleaning of the early 2000's traces of green paint were found on the dragon, which perhaps represents Satan.; North Porch, Right Portal
