Tympanum; Gothic; South Porch, Left Portal (Martyrs), Upper Part- General ViewThe tympanum, lintel and lower archivolts contain depictions of episodes in the martyrdom of Stephen. (See Chapters 6 and 7 of the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament).Tympanum: Christ between two kneeling angels. This is usually identified as the vision that Stephen saw during his martyrdom. Stephen saw Christ "standing at the right hand of God", and in this depiction, Christ is standing. Lintel: Stephen led to his martyrdom (left) and the Stoning of Stephen (right)Archivolts: Lowest register - More incidents in the Martyrdom of Stephen. On the left, the Condemnation of Stephen, to the right, a continuation of the stoning of StephenUpper registers - Innermost archivolt - haloed Holy Innocents (victims of the Massacre of the Innocents) sit holding palms and round objects that Houvet believes represent the "seal of God" Second Archivolt- At the top is a lamb. From it, streams of blood flow to the left and right. On the sides of this archivolt sit figures who dip their garments in the blood. Houvet says they are "those who come out of great tribulation and have washed their robes, and have made them white in the blood of the Lamb" (Revelation 7:9-10, 13-4) Third Archivolt- seated martyrs (haloed) holding palms Fourth Archivolt - seated kings and bishops Fifth Archivolt - Hierarchy of martyrs. From the bottom on each side: - Levites (in the Old Testament, this was a group descended from Levi, son of Jacob, They performed various duties in the Temple and the Tabernacle) -Deacons -Priests -Abbots -Bishops -At the apex, a Pope and an Emperor.; South Porch, Left Portal (Martyrs)
