Description
Tympanum; Gothic; North Porch, Left Portal (Incarnation Portal)Archivolts- CenterInner archivolt: Angels holding candlesticks standing on clouds.Second- Foolish and Wise Virgins from the Parable in Matthew 25:1-13. At left are the Foolish Virgins. They are standing figures of young women holding upside down lamps, to show that they had inadvertently let their lamps run out of oil. At the top center of this archivolt is the bust of an angel. On the right are the wise Virgins, who hold their lamps upright. The upper figures of the virgins hold the fastening of their mantles, a gesture associated with the upper classes. Third- Virtues and Vices (Compare with the Virtues and Vices on the columns of the South Porch).1) Below left are personifications of Strength and Cowardice, part of the series on the seven Virtues and Vices. Strength, depicted as a woman wearing chain-mail and a helmet stands holding a sword and a lion. Cowardice crouches on the ground in front of Strength. 2) Above left is the personification of Temperance, holding a dove. On the ground in front of her is Lust, pulling apart the top of her dress. 3) Above right is the personification of Humility, holding a dove. On the ground in front of her is Pride falling.4) Houvet identifies this as the personifications as "Charity clothing a beggar and Avarice hoarding her gold"Fourth - These crowned, standing women hold scrolls, which probably once held inscriptions. Some hold staffs on which there are banners. Houvet identifies them as as "Queens representing the Gifts of the Holy Spirit".; North Porch, Left Portal (Incarnation Portal)
