Description
Tympanum; Gothic; The leftmost archivolt shows episodes from the story of Tobit and his son Tobias.Below, Tobit gives Tobias the note of Gables (Tobias 4:21-3 and 5:1-3)Many years before, Tobit, a pious Jew, had lent ten talents of silver to a man named Gables, who lived in in Rages, a city of the Medes. A note had been drawn up to record the debt. In the lower scene, Tobit (bearded) now blind and poor, sits at left. He holds up a paper containing the note about the debt. At right his son Tobias, a beardless young man, sits on the ground. Above, Tobit blesses his son Tobias (Tobias 5:10-22)When Tobias is about to set out on his journey, he encounters the angel Raphael disguised as a young man and hires him as a guide lead him to the city of Rages. Tobias is blessed by Tobit, and Tobias and the angel set out on their journey. Tobit is seated at left, with his son kneeling before him, holding his knee. Behind them is the angel. The central archivolt is the story of Esther. In the final episode. Mordecai, uncle of Queen Esther, gives a messenger a letter in which the King reverses a previous edict that all the Jews in Persia should be killed. (Esther 9:20-32). Mordecai is the bearded figure standing at right. He gives an object to a man wearing a hood and a short tunic. To the right is Samson (barefoot, long hair) carrying the gates of Gaza. (Judges 16: 3). Marriage says this is a symbol of Christ breaking the doors of the tomb.At the far right, on the innermost archivolt, are angels standing on clouds. The angels at the top of the archivolts hold crowns.; North Porch, Right Portal, Left Archivolts- upper
