Description
Tympanum; Gothic; North Porch, Right portal, Lowest Archivolts- Left SideThe lowest level of the archivolts are large crowned heads. The significance of these figures is unknown.Above are the first episode in the Old Testament story of Judith, and the last episode of the story of Tobit and Tobias. See Katzenellenbogen, pp. 68-74, whose study of medieval texts led him to conclude not only that these characters were prefigurations of Mary and Christ, but that their stories illustrated the afflictions and eventual triumph of the Church. At left is Judith and an elderTwo figures stand inside of a representation of a city with a prominent gate at the front. Judith, veiled, stands a left. She appears to be holding an object that appears to be an open book out to a man with a beard. This may represent Judith 8:21-5, in which Judith reminds the elders of the piety of their ancestors. At right is the last episode of the story of Tobit and Tobias - Tobias curing Tobit of his blindness (Tobit 11:13-5)Tobit, a pious Jew, is the bearded older man sitting at left. At right kneels his son Tobias, a young, beardless man, touching Tobit’s eyes with the gall of the fish that he had killed in a previous scene. Behind Tobias stands the angel Raphael.; North Porch, Right Portal, right archivolts
