Description
Gothic; Royal Portal, Right: Lower LintelNativity of Christ (Luke 2:1-7, Matthew 1:25)The bearded man standing at left is probably Joseph. He wears a type of cap which appears on several other male figures on the tympanum and the jambs. Mary reclines on an elaborate bed with a craved frame. Above her, on the top of the bed frame is the Christ Child in a basket-like container. He is wrapped in a complex manner (meant to represent swaddling clothes?). On either side are broken-off figures- probably the traditional ox and ass. They are a reference to Old Testament verses thought to be prophecies of the coming of the Messiah. Isaiah 1:3 says, "The ox knows his owner and the ass his maker's crib." There is a similar verse in Habakkuk (3:2). The apocryphal Protevangelium of James mentions only the ass. The Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew also says that an ox and an ass worshiped the Christ Child in the manger.Mary and Joseph do not have halos. The angel at right pointing to the Nativity is part of the Annunciation to the Shepherds. It serves as a transition between the two scenes.Above are the lower parts of the figures in the Presentation at the Temple.; West Facade, Right Portal
