Description
Director of the Oakmont Carnegie Library from 1925-1968, Sara Moot Boyle stands on the left side of this photograph and gesticulates with glasses in hand. Two other, unidentified librarians stand beside her. Judging by the direction of their excited gazes, they is presumably caused by the printer, from which the woman on the right is taking a piece of paper. The woman in the middle flips idly through a card catalog. Andrew Carnegie donated money for the building of a library in Oakmont at the request of his cousin, Leander M. Morris, who lived in Oakmont. Carnegie ended up giving $25,000 to the establishment of the library. William Braithwait worked as the contractor for the library; the building cost $17,956 to build. Oakmont Carnegie Library opened in 1901. The initial collection consisted of 2,603 books, purchased using some of the money from Carnegie's donation and the rest from the Oakmont School Board. The library was renovated and expended in 2005, and has become a vibrant community center for the citizens of Oakmont and surrounding areas.
