Description
The three Oakmont Librarians of 1957 gather for a group photo, posing with some of the tools of the trade. The unidentified librarian on the left holds the telephone. The center librarian, Sarah Moot Boyle, director from 1925-1968, flips through the card catalog. Flossie Howard, on the right, reads a book from the library's collection. The stacks are visible in the background. Andrew Carnegie donated money for the building of a library in Oakmont at the request of his cousin, Leander M. Morris, who lived in Oakmont. Carnegie ended up giving $25,000 to the establishment of the library. William Braithwait worked as the contractor for the library; the building cost $17,956 to build. Oakmont Carnegie Library opened in 1901. The initial collection consisted of 2,603 books, purchased using some of the money from Carnegie's donation and the rest from the Oakmont School Board. The library was renovated and expended in 2005, and has become a vibrant community center for the citizens of Oakmont and surrounding areas. \
