Description
James B. Laughlin was a son of Henry A. Laughlin, and a grandson of James Laughlin, one of the founders of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation. James Laughlin, a banker and merchant, bought an interest in the firm of Jones, Lauth and Company, an ironworks, in 1856. In 1861 upon the retirement of Lauth, Laughlin and his sons, Henry A. and Irwin B., and Mr. B. F. Jones and his brothers, T. M. Jones and G. W. Jones, formed Jones & Laughlin’s American Iron Works. Prior to this in July 1859, these same partners and a Mr. Richard Hayes formed a partnership called Laughlin & Company and acquired land on the north side of the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh opposite the plant of Jones and Lauth where they erected blast furnaces that they called the Eliza Furnaces. James B. Laughlin served on the Board of Directors of Laughlin & Company and Laughlin & Company, Limited.
